YMCA's Summer Camp in Midland Has a New Twist

Updated: June 14, 2010

YMCA’s summer camp in Midland has a new twist. The camp now has a curriculum and teachers instead of staff members are in charge of teaching the classes.

“During the summer a lot of kids experience a trend to go back to the year before and its way to keep them learning and growing,” said Amanda Daniel, the Child Care Director for the YMCA in Midland.

But it’s still fun.

"I like hanging out with my friends, and going on the field trips, and swimming,” said Alex Wall, a 5th grader who attends the camp.

"I like going to the field trips, and sorta of the body combat, and I like body pump," said Drake Breeding, a 6th grader at the camp.

Alisha Owen’s son has gone to the camp for a couple of years. Owen said she brings her son to the YMCA because its family oriented and she likes that he can exercise by playing sports.

"Football, basketball, flag football," she said.

Kids also do arts and crafts, go to music class, and participate in show and tell.

The camp is for children between the ages of 4-12. It runs Monday-Friday from 7a.m. to 6p.m. Parents and guardians can still sign their children up. For more information call 432.682.2551.
