In fact, about 90% of victims know their assailant.
"On campus your going to have date rape, and acquaintance rape," said Betty Dickerson, the executive director of the Midland Rape Crisis Center.
Acquaintance rape involves coercive sexual activities that occur against a person's will by mean of force, violence, duress,or fear of bodily injury. These sexual activities are imposed upon them by someone they know, according to the Rape, Abuse &, Incest National Network.Date Rape is similar to an acquaintance rape except the victim has gone on a date or several dates with the perpetrator.
"Alcohol often plays a big part in college campus rapes," said Dickerson. "If you had to much to drink and cannot consent it's still rape."
Dickerson says it's never the victim's fought. She also tells Big 2 News students who are aware of their surroundings are less likely to become a victim.
