ECISD Pleased with AYP Results

The federal government’s annual Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) results show dramatic improvement by ECISD schools and also highlight areas in need of improvement.
Despite a substantial increase in the standards this year, 94% of ECISD schools met AYP compared to 85% of schools state-wide. AYP results are based on participation and passing rates for the state’s reading and math tests for grades 3-8 and 10. Attendance rates for elementary schools and graduation rates for secondary schools and districts are also measured. AYP examines all students as well as six subgroups of students: African American, Anglo, Hispanic, Economically Disadvantaged, Limited English Proficiency (LEP), and Special Education.
This year, all of the District’s elementary schools and junior high schools met AYP standards, as did the Ector County Youth Center. Last year three of the junior highs—Hood, Nimitz, and Ector—missed the mark.
Odessa High School and Permian High School both missed AYP in reading performance of special education students this year. In 2009 PHS met AYP while OHS missed in several areas. Last week both high schools received an Academically Acceptable rating by the Texas Education Agency. As a whole, ECISD missed AYP in reading and math performance of special education students. Last year the District missed AYP due to graduation rate.
“Our goal is for all of our schools to meet the AYP standards every year and we are making progress,” said Superintendent of Schools Hector Mendez. “The fact that 32 of 34 schools met AYP and 22 of our schools are rated either Exemplary or Recognized by TEA is evidence of the hard work being done in the classrooms across our District.”
