After more than two years of political and financial ups and downs, the eastern Illinois town of Mattoon backed out of the flagship energy project on Wednesday. Officials in Mattoon wrote U.S. Senator Dick Durbin a letter saying that changes made to the $1.2 billion Futuregen project were a deal breaker.
Durbin, a longtime backer of the project, said the energy department would quickly search for a new site.
