A soldier with ties to the Odessa area has died while serving overseas.
Staff Sergeant Matthew J. West was assigned to the 71st Explosive Ordinance Disposal Group. Earlier this week, he was killed in Afghanistan by an improvised explosive device.
West's parents live in Odessa, and his family lived here for a time during an earlier tour in Afghanistan. Four other soldiers were also killed in that blast.
