9th Annual Shakespeare Festival

Lots of stuff goes on in Odessa this time of year. Most of it is football related, but let's not forget about the arts. The 9th Annual Shakespeare Festival started up this weekend. It runs through September 19th and offers three different shows every weekend. They're doing "The Miracle Worker", “Night Sky" and "King Lear" by William Shakespeare himself.

"We have actors in from out-of-town...professional artists from the New York area, from Chicago, from Portland. We've been in rehearsal for a good two months to present these three plays," Kathryn Graybill, the Globe Artist Manager, said.

"We're focusing on the disenfranchised of our community...those people who through age or disability or stroke or accident or something...find themselves sort of on the fringes of society coping with some sort of disability," Anthony Ridley, the Globe Artistic Director, said.

For the past year, the Globe has worked closely with the Aphasia Center of West Texas. Together, they decided to do "Night Sky", which is about an astronomer who loses her language to aphasia. “The Miracle Worker" is about the life of Helen Keller. And "King Lear" is Shakespeare's classic tragedy...and is considered to be one of his greatest works.
