Sixth Grader Arrested For Bringing Weapons to School

Updated: September 16, 2010

A sixth grader at Jordon Elementary in Odessa was arrested this morning after bringing a gun and a knife to school. ECISD tells Big 2 News the student brought the weapons to school to show off.

"The gun itself was not loaded. There was no ammunition found," said ECISD spokesman Mike Adkins.

But, before the gun was found, the district said the six grade boy had the weapons stashed in his backpack at school.

"He did show it to some other kids early in the morning," said Adkins.

ECISD said the sixth grader then asked another student to hold the gun for him. The gun ended up in the other kid’s backpack. The other student went up to a teacher and told her what was going on.

"The teacher was able to confiscate the gun and the original kid's backpack with the knife in it," explained Adkins.

The sixth-grade student was arrested and taken to the Ector County Youth Center. He was charged with Places Weapons Prohibited, a third degree felony. Whether the sixth-grader will be suspended or expelled is still up in the air.
