In the past century, we've seen the number of our nation's fire-related deaths decrease from 25,000 a year to roughly 3,000.
It's a result of stricter fire codes, stricter safety codes and general awareness. That's the message the Midland Fire Department is spreading over the next several days during Fire Prevention week.
This year's theme is "Smoke Alarms: A Sound You Can Live With."
Fire Inspector James Howard says Fire Prevention Week campaign began "to celebrate the anniversary of the Great Chicago Fire, where so many people lost their lives...and it devastated the city of Chicago. So Fire Prevention Week was enacted to remember that event and keep fire safety in everyone's mind."
The Midland Fire Department will be going into our local schools and day cares spreading the message all week. They also received over 600 entries in their Fire Prevention poster contest. The top three will receive a trophy, or a ribbon, and a cash prize.
