The race for Texas Agriculture Commissioner is one of the most vicious campaigns we've seen this political season.
On Wednesday, Democratic candidate Hank Gilbert was back in the Permian Basin, posing more questions about his opponent. Gilbert is running against Republican incumbent Todd Staples, and he [Gilbert] has serious concerns about the agency is being run.
Gilbert brought up a 2007 case where a girl died from poisoning in Lubbock, after an employee got their hands on a toxic chemical from their workplace. That employee offered to use it to spray for pests at a Lubbock home, and that night all five people inside became ill. A 2-year-old girl, Vantashina Samuels, died from the exposure, and according to Gilbert  that employee never should have been able to get that chemical.
"It's supposed to be kept under lock and key at all times," said Gilbert."It has to be in a facility all by itself. It can't be stored with anything else and you have to have a special license."
Gilbert says that the company that lost the pesticide and the employee that used it only received small fines.  He also said this is what happens when you don't have enough people in the field, making sure people stay safe.
Big 2 has contacted the Staples campaign for a response, but we have not yet gotten a response.
