MIDLAND -- The Texas State Board of Education made national news headlines when they were voting on some controversial changes to state school books.
The changes were meant to limit the teaching of Islam, among other things. As that continues, the State Board of Education drew criticism for over-politicizing the text book process.
One member who was against those changes was Democrat Rene Nunez from District One. He's been on the board since 1989, and now he says the board shouldn't have the power to make those changes.
Nunez says that he's "going to be supportive of working with the legislature to hope that we can take that responsibility away from the State Board of Education, where some of us haven't been in a classroom for 20-25 years."
Nunez also says he wants to work with the legislature during this budget year to try and keep cuts from happening in classrooms. He's running against Republican Charlie Garza.
