CARLSBAD -- A New Mexico man is behind bars, charged with a deadly hit and run accident from late October.
Gilbert Melendrez, Jr. has been charged with homicide by vehicle resulting in the death of a human being, child abandonment, and more.
The actual accident happened on west green street in Carlsbad. Police say that Leora Jean Dyess was escorting some trick-or-treaters in that area, when she realized Melendrez was speeding towards them.
The Carlsbad Current-Argus reports Dyess threw her 4 year old daughter to safety before the truck crashed into her. Then the driver sped off.
Melendrez is being held on $500,000 bond.
