BIG SPRING -- On Friday, a jury in Big Spring reached a verdict for the first lawsuits filed in connection with the 2008 ALON USA refinery explosion.

Plaintiffs Ronnie and Debra Walker and Beverly Smithie were awarded hundreds of thousands of dollars in property damages, but the trials are far from over. About 150 lawsuits have been filed through the Pinkerton Law Firm, and roughly 200 more have been filed through a Dallas law firm.

Big 2 spoke with the plaintiffs' lawyer Chad Pinkerton. Pinkerton says the next trial could happen as early as March. Pinkerton said he's pleased with the outcome from last week, despite the fact that the plaintiffs did not receive gross negligence. He says the jury got hung up on a legal definition of gross negligence, and he believes that won't happen in future trials.

Pinkerton also mentioned that ALON USA is already talking about appealing the recent lawsuits.
