ODESSA -- An Odessa man was sentenced to 8 years probation for injuring a child.

Henry Poland, 27, was handed that sentence on Monday. Authorities say that Poland struck a 2-year old child and then picked him up by his head in February 2009. The victim was injured so badly that he ended up in the emergency room, unconscious and unresponsive.

An arrest affidavit says that Poland claimed the injuries were a result of the child running into cabinets at his home, but medical reports say that the child was also malnourished and dehydrated.

Poland was charged and convicted for felony injury of a child.
