AUSTIN -- Plenty of people will be hitting the roads to visit their families.

With that in mind, TXDOT is giving drivers some holiday safety tips to make sure they get to and from their destinations safely.

TXDOT says that drivers should be patient and allow enough time to get to their destination without having to rush. Drivers should try and avoid road rage, even if they come into contact with aggressive drivers on crowded roads.

Drivers should also check the weather before hitting the road and be prepared to change travel plans if rain or snow is in the forecast.

TXDOT says the most important advice is to not get behind the wheel if you've been drinking.
