ODESSA -- Hospitals in the Permian Basin are dealing with a rising number of flu cases in 2011.

The State Health Services Department reports that the flu is currently classified as "regional" in Texas. That means that the number of cases for the state is up from this time last year -- and it's flooding local emergency rooms.

"In the past what we've seen is the flu progress from the northern states to the southern [states], but with H1N1 in the fold the last couple of years, it's taken a flip-flop," Odessa Regional Medical Center Chief Nursing Officer Levi Stone told Big 2.

The best way to prevent the flu is to get a flu shot, and always remember to wash your hands on a regular basis.
