ODESSA -- The body of a person killed in a house fire in North Odessa has been sent to Tarrant County for an autopsy.

The victim died in the blaze at a home in the 6300 block of Benefield Monday night. A neighbor tried to get into the home to rescue the victim, but that neighbor couldn't get inside because the smoke was so thick.

Fifteen firefighters from six units were able to put out the blaze, but they couldn't save the victim's life. Half of the house was badly damaged by the fire, and the entire structure suffered heavy smoke damage.

Ector County Sheriff Mark Donaldson has not released the victim's name. The investigation continues.
