MIDLAND -- Midland's finest has three spots that need to be filled. And this Saturday, they'll be looking for people who make the grade. The tests include a physical assessment including pushups, sit ups and a timed run along with a written assessment. 20-25 people between the ages of 21 and 40 are expected to show up, and about four won't even make it through the physical exam. Those who do pass will join the midland police academy.

"We are a very hands on academy, focused on defensive tactics that takes training. We do a lot of physical fitness to defend yourself and the public.” Said Dylan Hale an officer at the Midland Police Department.

Although Midland is known as a relatively safe city, it's growing. Now the police department must respond to that growth spurt, making this an exciting time to join the force.

"Midland is growing with that is the growing pain of needing new resources. Its our challenge to hire the best candidates." Said Dylan Hale.

For midland's new recruits, the academy will not just test brawn but brains as well.

"Everyday is a new learning experience. Half of it is boot camp the other half is law school. "Said Dylan Hale.

Every year, the police department loses about 12 officers, giving any new recruits a good chance to be involved.

"I'm excited to get out in the community, interacting with people. " Said Kevin Haverman, a police recruit.
