Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano is expected to announce the color code threat level system will be replaced by what is described as a more specific alert system for the public.
Department officials have been mum about the specific changes but that will all change Thursday during a speech by Napolitano at George Washington University Homeland Security Policy Institute.
Sources say the new system will be similar to terrorism alerts currently used by Great Britain.
Under that system, the threat levels range from low to critical.
A critical alert in Britain means an attack is imminent.
At the present time, Britain's system is at the severe level, which means a terror strike is highly likely.
