AUSTIN -- The Texas Senate approved a voter I.D. bill after hours of debate Wednesday evening.

The final vote was 19 to 11 -- all along party lines. The G.O.P. has been pushing one of the toughest voter I.D. laws in the country -- requiring a photo I.D. at the polls.

Republicans say the bill would prevent fraud at the polls and ensure safer votes. Democrats -- who have fought the measure -- disagree. They believe that it will simply bolster Republican votes.

The measure now moves into the Texas State House for discussion there.
