HOUSTON -- Injured Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords is well enough to ask for toast for breakfast.
The Tucson lawmaker spoke her first words on Monday since suffering a gunshot wound to the head last month.
Giffords is undergoing vigorous rehab at the Memorial Hermann Medical Center in Houston.
The small request is a big step forward for Giffords who was wounded in a January 8th shooting rampage that killed six and injured 13.
Giffords' husband, astronaut Mark Kelly, tweeted on Tuesday that Giffords eats three meals a day "even though it's hospital food." Kelly recently decided to go ahead with training for Space Shuttle Endeavour's farewell mission on April 19th.
Giffords' doctors say their goal is to have her ready to attend her husband's launch in Florida.
