ODESSA -- Every year, the police department hands over its crime data to the uniform crime reporting system, and finds out how those figures compare to previous years. After seeing 2010's reports, many Odessa residents might feel a little more comfortable sleeping at night.

Odessa police must be doing something right, because the crime rate for 2010 decreased by 13 percent when compared with 2009.

"The department is very pleased, said Cpl. Sherrie Carruth. "And we hope that reflects on our community. "

Carruth says what is most impressive is that the number of robberies was cut in half.

"We saw decreases in others but for the most part we are seeing a big decrease in that particular area," said Carruth.

Five out the eight areas listed on the report have seen a drop in rate. These include larceny, robbery, arson and murder. These statistics can help give residents peace of mind.

"I feel safe out here and that's one of the reasons I moved out here," said Odessa Resident Richard Robles. "I really don't know the environment but it looks like its a pretty good place for my kids."

But the police don't want all the credit.

"We owe it to the police and the community," said Carruth. "Because without the backing and support and the community being our eyes and ears, what we do would be much harder."
