MIDLAND -- This week is Texas Severe Weather Awareness Week, and it's important to remember, severe weather -- including lightning -- will be coming back to the Permian Basin soon.

The National Weather Service wants to remind everyone that lightning can strike as far as 10 miles away from the rain. Because of this, you should follow the 30-30 rule. If you can't count to 30 between lightning flashes and the rumble of thunder, you should head inside.

Lightning is attracted to taller objects and metal objects, but it can also be carried through moist soil. The safest place to be during instances of lightning is inside and away from doors and windows.
