MIDLAND -- Midland I.S.D. officials have confirmed that the 5-year-old victim of a fatal weekend crash on Interstate 20 was a student at Sam Houston Elementary.

Cameron Dominguez was riding in a Chevy with her uncle - 30-year-old Juan Dominguez - on Sunday when smoke from a nearby grass fire caused visibility issues along the interstate. Juan Dominguez had apparently slowed down to avoid another crash when a tractor-trailer came up from behind, smashing into him.

The crash sent the truck into a pasture, where it caught on fire. Dominguez got his nephew out of the car first, and took him to safety. When he went back to get Cameron, the vehicle was completely engulfed in flames, and Cameron did not survive.

School officials say counselors are on hand to speak with Cameron's classmates.
