ANDREWS COUNTY -- One person is dead and two people are injured after an accident in Andrews County Thursday morning.

This crash happened around 7 AM on TX 176 about 14 miles east of Andrews. A Chevy pickup hit a Ford Taurus from behind in the eastbound lane of the road. The Taurus had been stopped in the road.

A passenger in the Taurus -- 26-year-old Brian Michael Smith of Midland -- was killed in the wreck. Department of Public Safety troopers say that Smith was not wearing a seat belt. An Andrews medical investigator tells Big 2 that Smith had trauma to his head and torso.

The driver of the Taurus -- 29-year-old Eric Ray Bernard of Midland -- was taken to Permian Regional Hospital in Andrews with a broken bone. He's in stable condition there.

The driver of the Chevy -- 49-year-old Melvin Wayne Carter -- was also taken to the hospital, but he was later released.
