ODESSA -- A trial has begun for a murder that happened more than 20 years ago.

A murder trial against Johnny Lee Wells started Tuesday. Wells is charged with capital murder for the stabbing death of Virginia Washelesky. The fatal stabbing happened in August 1990, but the case went cold for almost 15 years.

D.N.A. evidence linked Wells to the crime in 2004, and he was later arrested. Wells was indicted for capital murder in May 2010.

According to the indictment, Wells broke into Washelesky's home and tried to rape the victim before stabbing her to death.
