TO:                        Pastors and Pastoral Coordinators of the Diocese of San Angelo
FROM:                   Bishop Michael D. Pfeifer, OMI
RE:                        The Massive Earthquake in Japan

My dear brother Priests and Pastoral Coordinators:

We are all vividly aware from the many, many news stories of the massive earthquake, 8.9 magnitude, and tsunami that struck Japan and the surrounding area last week. This earthquake, one of the most powerful in history, and tsunami, have killed countless people, left thousands without homes, and have brought catastrophic damage to property and buildings. This powerful earthquake and tsunami have had an impact on a huge part of planet Earth.

So as to assist the millions of victims of this disaster, I am asking that every parish of our diocese take up a special collection, or make a special donation, to assist our suffering sisters and brothers in the various parts of the world that have been affected most by this catastrophic disaster. As the appeal for aid is obviously very urgent, I ask that you take action on this request as soon as possible in each parish of our diocese.

I ask that the funds that are gathered be sent to my office, identifying that it is for the earthquake disaster. In turn, I will immediately send this aid to Catholic Relief Services, or other reputable church agencies, so as to be sure that these generous donations reach those who are in great suffering. Again, I stress that because of this critical situation; please comply with this request as soon as possible. Of course, along with the financial aid, I ask that we pray for all those affected in our masses, in our prayers, both in our churches and in our homes. Thank you very much for responding to this urgent appeal. God’s peace.

Most Rev. Michael D. Pfeifer, OMI
Bishop of San Angelo
