FROM WFAA-TV DALLAS - Officials from the Dallas Cowboys have confirmed that former assistant coach Joe Avezzano has died.
Avezzano was in Italy, where he was coaching the Milan Seamen of the Italian Football League.
Cowboys officials said he was on a treadmill and collapsed. A defibrillator was used to try and revive him, but it was too late.
Avezzano was 68.
He supervised the Cowboys' special teams units from 1990 to 2002, working under head coaches Jimmy Johnson , Barry Switzer and Dave Campo.
Right before his move to Italy, Avezzano talked with WFAA's George Riba about his new assignment.
"People play for passion and the excitement and the love of it," he said. "You don't practice as much and you play on Saturday and it gives you free time during the week to go on a trip."
