ODESSA -- The aftermath of the 34-30 El Paso Montwood win over Permian is full of talk surrounding the controversy involving penalties.

The Panthers were flagged a school record 16 times for a total of 139 yards. Montwood had just one penalty for five yards the entire game.

After blowing a halftime lead, Permian had a chance to take the lead with two minutes left in the game, but two questionable calls sealed the Panthers' fate. Despite this, head coach Gary Gaines is not putting any blame on the officiating.

"We had a lot of penalties in that gum, and that's not an excuse," Gaines said. "We had plenty of opportunities to win the game, and we weren't able to do it. I wish we could've played a little bit better a times, but I'm proud of our players. With all the adversity the had, they stayed confident and played hard throughout the course of the game, and it's just a shame we didn't win it."
