The 911 system in New York City is clogged with ten times the normal volume of calls.

New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg says that they are getting 10-thousand calls every half an hour and he's begging anyone trying to report non-life-threatening emergencies to text 311 instead.

Bloomberg says an estimated quarter of a million customers are without power, including much of the island of Manhattan south of 34th street.

The power and the backup generator went out at NYU's hospital and emergency crews were helping get patients to other facilities.
