PRESIDIO -- U.S. Customs and Border Protection officials in Presidio find a live insect in a shipment of red peppers.

C.B.P. agents say that a flea beetle -- or Chrysomelidae insect -- was found inside a bulk shipment of fresh long red peppers that was headed through the Presidio Port-of-Entry from Mexico on November 13th.

Customs and Border Protection officials say flea beetles can damage crops in a number of ways.

Digital images of the beetle were sent to a U.S.D.A. entomologist and a specimen was sent to the Systematic Entomology Laboratory (S.E.L.) for final identification as an actionable pest.

Meanwhile, the shipment was exported back to Mexico through an Emergency Action Notification (E.A.N.) --  in accordance with the U.S. Code of Federal Regulations.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection agents also found a stink bug in a shipment of red peppers at the Columbus (NM) Port-of-Entry on November 15th.

The shipment of red peppers found with the stink bug in them in Columbus, NM was exported back to Mexico as well.
