It's only a phone call, but it's the most notable movement we've seen lately in the standoff over the so-called fiscal cliff.

President Obama and House Speaker John Boehner spoke by phone this afternoon.

An aide for Republican leaders in the House of Representatives confirms the phone call, but would not give any details on what was said.

Democrats and Republicans have been at a standoff over the fiscal cliff.

They are at odds over whether to implement higher taxes on the richest Americans.

The president and Congress have just 27 days to compromise on their own plan before automatic spending cuts and tax hikes take place.
