SPCA Using New Methods To Speed Up Adoption

MIDLAND -- The playful pups at the Midland SPCA have a lot to celebrate.
"We will not euthanize for space so the animal will be here for life," said shelter director Yoshina Woods.
Because of that motto, it's a packed house at the shelter, who tells Big2 as the human population grows in the Basin, so does the number of animals.
"There is an overwhelmingly amount of homeless animals," stated Woods. "We get calls every day."
It's been 2 months since Woods took on the role as shelter director of the SPCA.
She says, in that time, she's working to take the facility in a new direction by using social media to help with the adoption process.
"With Facebook, we're able to post a lot of the pictures of the animals that we have for adoption," said Woods. "We're hoping to start soon listing our animals on other websites."
Woods says since they've started their Facebook page the Shelter's seen an increase in their adoption speed.
"Probably about 10 animals every couple of weeks," explained Woods. "So we're slowly getting them out the door."
To help with the overpopulation problem at their facility, the SPCA is also implementing a new foster care program.
This allows families to temporarily take care of a pet for as long as they're able to.
"If somebody is able to open up their home temporarily for a dog or a cat, that would open up a space for us to be able to help someone else," stated Woods.
The foster care program doesn't cost any money up front.
All foster parents have to do is provide food and lodging until the animal can find a permanent home.
"We do have a couple of our animals placed in foster homes," explained Woods. "And we're hoping that we will soon be able to reach more people."
