ODESSA -- Martin Luther King Jr. Day is Monday, however Saturday the Texas Civil Rights Project held a special awards gala called "I Have a Dream night" at the Salon 20/20 in Odessa.

The event was the second annual gala held by the organization that advocates for the disabled, Hispanic immigrants, African-Americans and all groups pushing for equality.

"We're just trying to raise awareness of all the civil rights leaders and all the civil rights causes that are out there," said Cynthia Lucero with the Texas Civil Rights Project.

Special guest Reverend William Lawson from Houston's Wheeler Avenue Baptist Church was brought in to serve as the keynote speaker.

"It seems to deal with all kinds of people with different kinds of needs, so I respect it because it is cause related," said Lawson.

Back in the 1960's Lawson and King marched together on behalf of civil rights.
