UTPB Students Need More Jobs For Annual Program: The Big Event

UTPB Student Senate Parliamentarian Raquel Rivas said, "So we have plenty of volunteers we just need to get them some jobs to be done."
The Big Event was first organized under the University of Texas at Austin and later moved to include colleges across Texas under the UT brand.
"Last year for instance we went to a church and pulled up carpet, we mowed some lawns we picked up trash on the highway, any and everything we could think of we tried to do," said Rivas.
This is the second year, UTPB students have taken part in The Big Event. They said the legacy of the event came about in an effort to show community member their appreciation for all they've done for the schools. However, Rivas believes that based on the shortage of people requesting help, one would think Odessa didn't need any sort of help.
Big 2's Katiera Winfrey asked, "How's your luck been in implementing this?" Rivas said, "Unfortunately it's been hard to get the word out to the community so we don't have very much projects to be done."
Signing up for the UTPB event is actually an easy process. Senate members said, an organization or person can fill out a paper application or even sign up online.
"We would just love to give back as much as possible and we have plenty of eager students willing to give back and put in time to just say thank you to the community," said Rivas.
Until more people sign up, Rivas just hopes the day of "The Big Event" March 30, will really turn into one big day of thanks for the yearly Big Event.
UTPB student volunteers will only be able to help people in the Odessa area. Senate members said, some of the students don't have cars and traveling all over would be difficult since they rely on one another to get to different locations.
