The Fort Stockton Pioneer reports that Fort Stockton City Manager Raul Rodriguez has been directed to negotiate an interlocal agreement with Odessa officials to fund the monitor well.
The $680,000 monitor well is expected to be drilled about 10 miles southwest of Fort Stockton.
Since the well is expected to be drilled on Fort Stockton property, Fort Stockton officials won't need a permit from the Middle Pecos Groundwater Conservation District to proceed.
If the water from the well is potable, Fort Stockton and Odessa could collaborate on a test well.
The Capitan Reef Aquifer could soon become a water source for both Odessa and Fort Stockton.
If the water from the aquifer can be made potable, Odessa plans on upgrading Fort Stockton's water treatment plant and building a pipeline to bring the water to Ector County.
