AUSTIN -- The Texas Legislature is taking a look at football helmets, in the hopes of making things safer on the field.

The Texas House is considering a bill that would require all helmets be reconditioned after 10 years, and then every 2 years. Also, any helmets that have been used for 16 years would have to be thrown away. Districts would have to keep detailed records of how long the helmets had been in use.

"If you're going to have and establish and operate a football program, we should have basic standards for the safety involved with those who are participating in that program," said Representative Eddie Lucio III, (D) Brownsville.

The bill received a unanimous vote on second reading on Tuesday. On Wednesday, lawmakers are expected to vote on the bill in its third and final reading.
