On Tuesday morning, O.C. athletic director Wayne Baker announced in a press release Helms would not be with the team effective immediately.
"We are moving on in a different direction with our men's basketball program," Baker said. "We want to thank Coach Helms for his leadership and service to the basketball program at O.C."
Helms had an overall record 402-116 as the coach with the Wranglers. The 2011-2012 season started out as a promising one for O.C. The team was ranked as high as tenth in the nation at one point, but they would fail to get out of the NJCAA Region 5 Tournament, and once again miss the NJCAA National Tournament. Odessa finished the season with 28-7 record.
The search for Helm's replacement will begin immediately.
