ALPINE -- Excitement is running high in Alpine as the Bucks return to the practice field in a new district this season.

Alpine was in 2-2A division one a season ago but have moved down to division two this year. Even with the movement there are still familiar foes on the schedule.

"It's going to be a highly competitive district," Alpine head coach Stacy Martin said. "I think everyone is well balanced out. It's going to be a week-in and week-out battle to get in (to the playoffs). You've got a lot of playoff teams that are coming into the district; a lot of new teams."

The Bucks return 11 starters from last season's playoff team, including junior quarterback Evan Moore, who has been starting since he was a freshman. Last year, Moore racked up 2,136 yards and 17 touchdowns, and feel he can have a better season in 2012.

"Each year the game gets slower," Moore said. "The knowledge I've gained makes everything slow down. I guess it's helped since my freshman year when everything was fast. It's just slowing the game down and keeping calm."

Alpine opens the season on Aug. 31 in Pecos.
