Texas Tech opened its season against Northwestern State at Jones AT&T Stadium Saturday. Tech never lost the lead during the game and came away with a 44-6 win.

Senior quarterback Seth Doege completed 68 percent of his passes for 199 yards. He had one touchdown and one interception. Doege guided the Red Raiders to 500 total offensive yards.

Head coach Tommy Tuberville made a point to emphasize the run game and it showed. The Red Raiders piled on 179 rushing yards compared to Northwestern State's 13 on the ground. Eric Stephens made his highly anticipated return after last year's season-ending knee injury. Stephens carried most of the load for the Red Raiders with 16 carries for 58 yards and two touchdowns that came in the first half of the game. Kenny Williams also played a key role in the ground attack and produced 75 yards on 15 carries.

The Tech defense had a lot to prove Saturday. After the Red Raiders finished last season as one of the worst defenses in the country, all eyes were on the new scheme and new defensive coordinator Art Kaufman. From the start, the Red Raiders held true to their off-season promises and only allowed 84 total offensive yards from the Demons. Northwestern State was only able to convert six first downs throughout the four quarters.
