MIDLAND COUNTY  -- The Permian Basin is hoping to be home to the Texas state champion pecan again this year.

The 35th annual Permian Basin Pecan Food Show got underway Monday in Midland County.

The event features a variety of different food categories, from pecan breads to pies. The food show also features three classes of raw pecans: commercial, classic and variety seedlings.

The event is fitting, since the Permian Basin has a long tradition of producing champion pecans.

"In the Permian Basin in the last few years we've been very good in our pecan production," Midland County AgriLife Extension Agent Zan Matthies told Big 2. "We had the state champion pecan last year that came out of here. It came out of this show, so we're pretty excited to have another good show this year."

The raw pecans are judged based on commercial grading standards.

Judges take 10 nuts and weigh them with the shell. Then, the judges then crack the pecans to weigh just the edible (or "meat") portion. Finally, judges compare the 2 weights to get the turnout percent.

The contest was free to enter.
