MIDLAND -- Texas Governor Rick Perry is joining governors from four other states to speak out about the Lesser Prairie Chicken.

Perry and the governors of Colorado, Kansas, New Mexico and Oklahoma issued a joint statement opposing U.S. Fish and Wildlife service's recent proposal to list the chicken as threatened.

The governors said in the statement that conservation efforts by their states and commitments from industry leaders and landowners to address risks to the Lesser Prairie Chicken's habitat should have kept the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service from listing the species as threatened.

Still, the governors said they're encouraged that the Lesser Prairie Chicken hasn't been listed as endangered.

The Lesser Prairie Chicken has a habitat in West Texas and Southeast New Mexico.

If the species is officially listed as threatened, it could hurt the ranching and wind farming business.

A final decision on the listing is expected in the fall.
