Updated: January 23, 2013
Jay Brooks died from what is believed to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the chest during the incident, which happened at a home in the 600 block of SW 16th Street around 4:40 PM on January 22nd.
Police say that Brooks had been arguing with a woman for the past several days.
The woman called police to the home for a civil standby request around 4:30 PM on January 22nd.
The civil standby was enacted so that the woman could gather her belongings from the home safety.
However, police say that Brooks pointed a gun at the woman in the home, and she ran outside as they arrived on the scene.
Officers say they heard a single gunshot come from the home.
Seminole Police, Gaines County Sheriff's deputies and Texas Department of Public Safety troopers surrounded the home for several hours.
Authorities also evacuated nearby homes as they tried to contact Brooks.
Officers decided to enter the home around 6:50 PM on January 22nd.
Once inside the home, officers found Brooks' body near the front door of the home.
Officers say no law enforcement agents were fired at during the standoff, and it's believed that only one shot was fired during the entire incident.
The incident is now being investigated as a suicide.
Police and Texas Rangers are investigating the incident.
