The Pentagon is laying off up to 46,000 temporary workers as it braces for automatic budget cuts to kick-in next month.

9.4 percent spending cuts across-the-board are due this year under the so-called Fiscal Cliff.

Lawmakers made a last-minute deal in January postpone the start date until March 1st.

The cuts are expected to hit Defense particularly hard, slicing 490 billion dollars from the department's budget over the next decade.
