MIDLAND--The deadly wreck toll keeps going up and over the past week, some of those deaths can be attributed to not wearing a seatbelt. While it may seem obvious to some, DPS Trooper Molly Hernandez would like to give a reminder to drivers.

"Wearing your seat belt is the law, it's required by law, everyone in the vehicle including passengers whether it's the front seat or the back seat ," said Hernandez.

She said on top of it being the law, it can save your life.

"80 percent more likely that you will survive a crash if you're wearing your seatbelt," said Hernandez

Tuesday, a deadly wreck along highway 1788 killed a passenger in a semi. Sunday, a crash involving a yellow truck running into a utility pole killed the driver and critically injured the passenger. In both crashed not wearing a seat belt contributed to the deaths and injuries.

Hernandez said, "54 percent of fatality crashed every year are directly related to people not wearing their seatbelt."

Buckling up is step that is often overlooked, despite it taking a short about of time to complete.

"As soon as you get in your vehicle before you turn your ignition on put your seat belt on," said Hernandez.

She said, often people get distracted by the radio or children or just by rushing. However, she urges that buckling up should be the first thing and is the best thing to help thwart off serious injury or death if you're involved in a wreck.
